Overview
Aqua is a difference maker. Ever since she was young, growing up in the Land of Departure, she was a driven and avid student. Always sure of herself, and her friends, Terra and Ventus. She trained first with Terra, only meeting Ventus later on, but the other two became very important to her. As the kind of person who needs something to believe in, Aqua found that something in their friendship and her own power to protect that friendship. Her strength came from her friends, as it always would thereafter.
As a Keyblade Master, Aqua has always believed in the power of light, and it's ability to light the way in the darkness. But it has not always been the blessing of strength it would seem to be. Her steadfast reliance on the light can make her unwavering, and unwilling to compromise with the darkness and those who make use of it's power. In Aqua's eyes, the darkness is a slippery path that, once tread, is difficult if not impossible to return from. And, her thoughts were not exactly disproven with Terra's descent into darkness at the hands of Xehanort. The darkness takes things. It claims them and never lets go.
Despite seeing the world very much in the manner of light and dark, she is fast to make friends, and fast to believe in people. She is an optimist. The darkness will be defeated, and light will always guide the righteous. Her belief in this fact allows her to put her faith in herself, and those allied with her, even when all hope seems lost. Even when she was lost in the Realm of Darkness...for so, so long. Even when all hope seemed lost, Aqua was able to re-assure herself in the end that yes, the worlds could be saved, and yes she would see the light of day again. She would see her friends again. She truly believed this with all of her heart.

Birth by Sleep
Birth by Sleep
Aqua was raised from the time she was small in the Land of Departure. It was a beautiful place to both live and train. And Aqua took to that training very well. Her rigid and structured mind reveled in the practice and discipline of Keyblade arts. She trained with her friends, Terra and Ventus, under Master Eraqus, already a well-established master. Another master, Xehanort, was known to them, although he didn't visit often. Xehanort sat in on the Mark of Mastery exam that Aqua and Terra undertook. The two keyblade wielders sparred against each other, and fought a few apparitions of light Summoned by the master. During the Mark of Mastery exam, Terra nearly gave into the darkness in his heart to give him an edge in the fight. It seemed a small oversight at the time, but that sliver of darkness was as a single drop of water in a pool, causing ripples that would change all of their lives for the worse.
Terra played right into Xehanort's plans. Terra left the world, in order to investigate the dangers the master had spoken of earlier. Ven followed him recklessly. And Aqua was tasked with bringing the boy back, and Terra as well, if need be. Little did any of them known, it would be far from a simple voyage for any of them. Ven and Terra were both integral parts of Master Xehanort's plan to harness Kingdom Hearts with something called the ✘-Blade. After much toil and pain, the plan came to fruition on the grounds of the Keyblade Graveyard, a place where many Keybladers had lost their lives in an event called the Keyblade War. The sullenless of it was not lost on Aqua. It was hard to believe that there were once so many keybladers, and that so many of them could lose their lives in an event like this was...devastating.
But she had little time to ponder such things. The friendships she leaned on were fracturing, and standing as the dust settled was Xehanort, having taken possession of Terra's body. Ventus was unconscious, and it was up to Aqua to do her best to set things right. She used Eraqus's Keyblade, the Master's Defender, to seal the Land of Departure, turning into an ever-changing maze called Castle Oblivion. There she locked Ven's unconscious body away, in hopes that he would not be found until she could find a way to restore him.
Then, she met Terra-Xehanort on the battle field. In the end, she could not separate the two, and as the fight concluded, she and Terra-Xehanort falling through darkness, she used her keyblade armor and glider, sending Terra-Xehanort back through the portal, and falling into darkness alone.

A Fragmentary Passage
A Fragmentary Passage
Time didn't pass in the endless abyss below. There were dark, menacing things around every corner, and a constantly-changing landscape that seemed to peel away at her sense of self...not to mention her sense of direction. Still, she fought. An endless fight, with no quarter or place to rest...for years. The wandered through paths she'd seen before, across shores she'd never see again, until she met Mickey. He had found her in the Realm of Darkness, not expecting to find her there. He was looking for something. A special Key, one that could help seal a door. She heard from Mickey that the children from the Island...Sora, and Riku, had become keyblade wielders both, regardless of her express desire for only one of them to inherit it. It was just as well. The Keyblade chose it's master wisely, it would seem, as Sora had already saved several worlds from the darkness. Her task, put on the shoulders of another.
But there was hope in this, as Mickey revealed that it was possible to escape the Realm of Darkness when a world fell into darkness, or when one returned from the darkness. In the end, in order to buy Sora, Riku, and Mickey time to seal the door, Aqua was dragged back into the realm of darkness, and her eternal fight persisted. But her hope, which had been waning, was restored. There was a way out. Light would find a way for her. And she had friends on the other side. She would keep fighting, until she was finally able to return from this place of utter darkness.

Dandelions in the Wind
Dandelions in the Wind
Wandering alone in the dark was wearing on her, even still. She passed through old roads, and new roads, and when she felt like she could go no further, Aqua was faced with yet another challenge. The large heartless cast her from the fragmented platform beneath Cinderella's Castle, into a particularly deep darkness.
The fall itself seemed endless, until she awoke, and was surrounded by an amazing scene. They were keybladers, several of them. They wore brightly colored clothing, flashing keyblades - some of which seemed very familiar, and others seemed very different. They were suspended in time all around her, locked in combat with one another. As she released the time-constraint that locked them all in combat, a mysterious book that came with them was relinquished to her. The "Dandelions" as they were called, explained that they had been fighting in a great war, that aqua could only think must have been the Keyblade war of Legend. There was little time to stand on ceremony, however, as Aqua could feel a shift in the energies of the world. This place she had landed in, this place she'd never set foot in before, held traces of the lost Keyhole of the worlds she'd visited. With the help of the Dandelions, and with a great exersion of personal effort, Aqua managed to summon the keyholes, lock them, and open the door to the Realm of Light.
When she awoke, the Dandelions were nowhere to be found, but she found herself lying on the ground in Castle Oblivion. She assumed that the Dandelions must have been scattered to other worlds throughout the cosmos. But she would find them. She would guide them. And against their combined strength Xehanort would stand no chance.

Falling...
Falling...Into Darkness.
The descent was slow, like sinking into dark water. She had felt it before, but not since waking in the Realm of Darkness all that time ago. How long had it been since she'd seen Mickey? Since she'd faced off against the apparitions of Ven and Terra in her mind. The chilling pang in Terra's voice still haunted her closed eyes. She had to get out...She had to...keep...fighting. It wasn't over yet. She had to believe that this was true from the bottom of her heart.
And her eyes opened to see the blackened canopy above her head once more. She had become accustomed to the abrupt change of scenery since falling into darkness, wandering from one broken vestige of her past after another. But this...this was different. As she stood up, and looked around, she couldn't believe her eyes. "Keyblades...!" She exclaimed. There were keybladers all around her. Frozen in time, their blades clashing silently against each other for who knew how long. "Could it be...another trick played by the darkness?" She asked the emptiness. She had realized that she spoke to herself a lot in the dark place. She supposed she had to, to keep track of her sanity. In the center of this time-stopped battle field was a glowing cluster of gears, suspended in the air. It looked very much like the ones she'd encountered earlier in her trip through what used to be the Castle of Dreams.
Slowly, carefully, she made her way through the throng of keyblade wielders, taking note of their strange attire, and the keyblades, some of which seemed very familiar to her, and others seemed very different. As she passed one of them, she could have sworn the young boy was staring at her...looking right into her eyes. But, as she passed, his eyes stayed motionless.
Upon reaching the center of the field, standing in front of the strange clockwork contraption, she could see that the structure was chained together, and that a book seemed to float in the center, untouchable. Aqua gave another look around, looking to each of the keybladers before summoning the Master's Defender. Pointing the key at the keyhole, a beam of light escaped, and a clicking sound alerted her that her efforts had succeeded. The gears moved, and vanished. The book fell to the ground with a thud, and the keybladers each stumbled to life, looking around in surprise of their new surroundings. Aqua picked up the book from the ground, looking it over. "What is this book...?" Again, she asked no one in particular.
"It's called the book of Prophecies." A voice rang out behind her, alerting her to the close proximity of one of these keyblade wielders. "You don't look familiar...Who are you?"
Aqua looked over the group before her eyes finally rested on the young girl that was addressing her. There were so many questions to be answered, so many emotions to feel. But for now, a simple greeting would have to start it off. Aqua nodded to the girl, and took a step back, raising her voice to address all of the disoriented Key bearers. "I'm Master Aqua...And we're in the Realm of Darkness." She glanced down at the book in her hands, and felt a wash of new hope as she looked over all those there assembled. "But not for long."
