Terra had been to Thebes before with her mentor and caretaker, Orpheus. But they were usually superficial visits. You don't end up in strange places when you're just passing through, especially with someone who knows the area. But now, Terra lived here. She had finally been able to convince Philoctetes to let her train at the Colosseum. A "Junior Heroine" he called her. There was a certain amount of sarcasm in that sentiment, but Terra had the feeling that he meant well.
Of course, she had that feeling about most people. And the bustling city of Thebes was doing everything in it's power to prove her wrong. Thebes was a big town, and word traveled fast when the subject was myths, monsters, or catastrophes, and it seemed to most people that Terra was all three. It was no secret to her that most people didn't have green hair. She must stick out like a sore thumb everywhere she went. She pretended not to hear the jeers and the laments for "poor old Orpheus" as she went along.
At present, the mint-haired hero-in-training stood now before a place of lodging, nervously pulling at the threads of her sash. It wasn't quite an inn, meant instead for longer stays. Taking a deep breath, she steeled herself and went inside. If she were to train here, she'd need a place to stay at night.
The inside of the boarding house was not small, but there were a pluthera of pillars, plants, and furniture, and all the people sitting and standing around that furniture made the place feel cramped up. There was a thick smell in the air that Terra had already began to attribute as an aspect of Thebes. As soon as she entered, all eyes were on her. She did her best to puff out her chest and neutralize her expression, so as not to seem like a victim. After all, she was going to be a hero!...maybe. Still, the prying eyes of the crowd were like razors, peeling layers off of her resolve as she moved through them.
the only person in the room not looking at her was the person at the counter, who seemed enthralled in conversation with a nearby tennant about some happenstance in the market. Something about a boy with a monkey-tail?
Doing her best not to intrude, Terra brought a thin hand up to her mouth and cleared her throat. "Excuse me...Ma'am...?"
The portly lady behind the counter didn't so much as glance at Terra. But the tone of the conversation changed, instead, now she was talking about how unfortunate it was that Orpheus was dead, and that the Witch he'd fostered must have sucked the life out of him. Terra's hand fell to rest on the table. As she looked down at her hand, she could see faint tendrils of ice beginning to snake out from her fingertips. She sucked in her breath. No. Not here. Be Normal. Be Normal. She cleared her breath again. A little louder this time. "Ma'am. I'd like a room." She tried again, with as firm a voice as the soft-hearted girl could muster.
The eyes of the woman behind the counter slid over to her then, followed by the rest of her head. Terra thought it felt like a predator locking onto it's prey. "Can't you see we're all full up? Go take your devilry somewhere else. Or should I send a runner to find Hercules? I'm sure he'd like to know there's a monster running around loose in Thebes."
Terra blanched, her hand sliding off the table. "Very well, I'm sorry to...have bothered you." She turned, feeling the tears well up behind her eyes, but determined not to let them fall here, among these people. She started walking towards the door, but stopped when her foot felt resistance enough to send her tumbling forward onto the floor. One of the men standing around had tripped her. Someone in the room was cackling loudly. There were hateful words aplenty floating around in the air and Terra did her best to tune them out, looking down at the floor, at her hands, focusing on not bringing a thunderbolt down on them right there and then. Restraint was her path. It had to be. No matter how much these people hurt her.
The man who had tripped her stepped in front of her now, looking down at her. He had a round belly, thick arms, and a disgusting grin. "Look, see, it's not that hard to topple monsters, is it boys? maybe I should become a hero myself, just like old Herc!"[/b]
