The white walls of Castle oblivion were as empty and confusing as they were when she left them. It was just as well, she supposed, that the only sound she heard was the clicking of her boots on the marbled floor. As she walked, she felt the weight of the years press down upon her. She could feel that a struggle had gone on in this place, though too much time had passed for her to know what.
As she walked passed one of the white pillars, something caught her eye. It was a pointed yellow dagger, partially broken, still lodged into the pillar from some distant encounter. "What happened here...?" She asked herself, as she pulled the dagger from it's place. Still talking to yourself, you silly girl. After looking the artifact over, she tossed it to the ground and continued walking, taking note of all the marring and scratches from various blades that she passed along the way. Someone had fought their way through here. Someone had fought to defend something. to protect something. She sighed. "Some things never change." She mumbled, passing through another door, and walking down a familiar hallway towards the Chamber of Waking. Nobody should have been able to find this place that didn't already know where to look. She had no reason to think that Ventus wasn't there. He should be sitting there, devoid of thought and motion, just as broken as when she left him. And the thought of that...made her heart ache.
She did not expect the seat to be empty when she opened the door. Loud echoes filled the room as Aqua dashed toward the empty seat, slowing to a stop as she approached it. It was empty. How? her brows knitted together in worry, and she wheeled around, searching. She wanted to call out, but then...what good would that do? She'd been gone for over a decade...What happened to Ven, it would be almost impossible to track him down...
The Master's Defender dropped from her hand, clanging to the ground audibly, and she collapsed forward into the seat, her head in her arms in the place he should have been. "Ven...I let you down...I'm so sorry." All those years in the darkness, she had hope that her friends were out there. That she would see them again. She held onto that hope all these years, but now, in the reality of her time away, she felt that hope shattering like glass.
She had no idea how long she knelt there crying into the cold seat, but at length, she heard the Master's voice somewhere in her head. "Aqua, you're Strong, you're a Master now. Take your place among the masters of old, and there's nothing you can't overcome." This was it. She had finally snapped. She turned to see a mirage of Master Eraqus standing in the entry way to the Chamber of waking, walking towards her. Wiping tears from her eyes, she stood finally, facing him. The Master's Defender still lay on the floor, she hadn't summoned it back yet.
"Master, I failed. The worlds, so many fell to darkness. Xehanort won. You were defeated, and now...Ven..." She motioned back to the unoccupied seat. "How do I even begin to fix this?"
The mirage of the Master moved passed her, standing over the Keyblade that was once his. "You're not Alone, Aqua. You never have been. Remember that, even now, you have friends among the stars."
Aqua took a deep breath, paused. "Yes, Master." She reached into her pouch and pulled out the Wayfinder. It was weathered now. A few pieces were cracked, like her heart. But still in one piece. She clutched the wayfinder to her chest. "Ven...if you can sense me...I'm home. Wherever you are, please, I'll be waiting." He was okay. He'd woken up and he was living just fine. This was what her heart had chosen to believe. This was the belief that called the Master's Defender back to her hand.
The Master's Mirage was gone. She had no need of Mirages anymore. There were real people out there who knew her. Who would help her. Who would count her as friend. That was enough. Walking behind the throne she found the keyhole, in the same place she'd left it, and thrust the Master's Defender into it. There was a bright light that flooded the halls, spreading out as far as the world would reach, and in an instant Castle Oblivion was no more, replaced instead with her home of the Land of Departure. Aptly named, it would seem. This was where it all began.
Coming around the end of the throne, she looked at the keyblade in her hand, looked at the stone chair, and sat down in it, facing the long marbled entry way that she'd grown up in. She'd never sat in this chair before. Not as apprentice, and certainly not as master. Now she sat in it, ready to do all she could for the worlds...
And she relaxed, allowed herself to slump a bit, closed her eyes and let sleep smooth her features. For the first time in twelve years, it was time to rest.
